| i will ask lee hoiby if he has any of these. i know that many of the recordings later released by Pearl records were from hoiby's personal collection, often recorded by him at private concerts... |

I'm pretty sure all the Friedman recs are from studio takes. |

There are a couple on that list that look like they might not have been in-studio broadcasts. Specifically the Beethoven, Brahms and Chopin Concertos - maybe even the Saint-Saens. I think in most cases, assembling an orchestra in order to broadcast a performance is not very profitable, so these are likely from live concerts.
Also, it's conceivable that those recordings marked 'Radio' are not studio broadcasts. They could very well be live concerts which were broadcast simultaneously. We know for a fact that they did the same thing for many of the Kapell recitals only 10 years later. It's possible they had the technology in place in the early 40s as well.
Still, it's not very likely that any of these tapes survived.... so fantasizing about this is only going to depress me |

These are not tapes - in the early 1940's (aside from Nazi Germany) recordings were made on 33rpm radio transcription disks.
All of these recordings were LIVE except for the May - July ABC Sydney Australia sessions.
These are the STUDIO recordings (from the Arbiter Website):
May 25 Sydney: (ABC) Chopin: Sonata op. 58, 2 Mazurkas, Valse, Nocturne, Scherzo.
June 1 Sydney: (ABC) Chopin: Sonata op. 35, Barcarolle, Ballade, 3 Etudes.
June Sydney: (ABC) Schumann: Kreisleriana, Mendelssohn: Var.Serieuses.
June Sydney: (ABC) Schumann: Etudes Symphoniques, Weber: Rondo
Brilliante, Invitation to the Dance.
June Sydney: (ABC) Brahms: Sonata 5, Intermezzo, Ballade, Valse.
July Sydney: (ABC) Liszt: Sonata, Leggierezza, Serenade, Erlking.
All recording are destroyed - and NOT recoverable. Australia and New Zealand is a lost cause, it seems. |

| What a tragedy. Means we should cherish the recordings we have all the more. Thanks for the info btw. |
