I think all of Chopin’s works started as improvs, that’s how he would work out his ideas.
Tru. But it’s interesting to compare which pieces most resemble what his free improvs would have sounded like.
I’m sure his best stuff was distilled into compositions and that the improvs themselves would not all be as memorable.
Also it’s impossible to imagine he would have improvised his Etudes but more conceivable to imagine his nocturnes could be largely improvised.
