Haha zhorly a miztake diz?
“Hamelin”
Not a fan. I only put him in there so as not to offend.
That’s why I iz zhocked he made yo list
His Minacciosa is pretty good, though.
Maybe this is why I’ve had a hard time with some of these Medtner sonatas, Hamelin has been my go to set. I have a bunch of the others you cite like the versions by Gilels, Richter, Severin, Wild, etc. but haven’t really listened to them for the purpose of listening to Medtner.
For a complete set get Tozer. He’s a good default in anything Medtner.
BUT da DOC own diz fairy tale, amazing playing here.
He actually zhowz gensui touchez ov a golden age mazta in both tone colah n rubato in momentz here. Makez u wizh da DOC zhowed hiz zoul mo often inztead ov bein a calculatin mofo.
Wut did you think of da COQ Romantica?
Actually mah favorite vid of diz time iz da reminiizcena
I can upload Doc complete zonz
I think coq romantica is world-class, top-tier stuff, of course
For me Medtner is a contrapuntist of the highest order & why I love his music so much. Rach uses chords in a colour/impressionist manner, but Medtner’s strange chords are always rigorously worked out.
I’ve played two concerti, one violin sonata, a good number of the songs, a bunch of skazki, a handful of the sonatas, and all of it has been immensely rewarding. Even made an arrangement of one of the songs to play for my graduation recital a while back.
The 2nd improvisation is a MASTERPIECE. Listen to it over & over again and it becomes utterly magical.
Congratulations on graduating! What are your plans now, are you going to stay in the UK or head back to S’pore?
Any fave interps?
Please do if it’s not a hassle. Thanks!
I’m still kicking about, hopefully permanently! I’ve been aying things here & there, which is fun.
For the 2nd Improvisation Wild is good, and Vladimir Tropp is a surprise. I like Milne, of course, and Tozer.
