One of the Great Orchestral albums of all time. There never has been a recording of the 5th like this one.

This IS the greatest Beethoven 5 ever recorded. I have NO doubt - and I’m a HUGE Furtwangler fan, but he just can’t top this kind of perfection.

Anyone remembers the Furtwangler live 5 that he conducted for Hitler? I’ve never heard such a slow tempo taken. I read that he was forced into the total abysmal fucked-up shit job and his interpretation for that particular event was a sort of protest.

I don’t think that’s true. He DID play Beethoven 9 for Furt once and he refused to Salute Hitler… but afaik that’s the only time he played FOR hitler.

Either way, there are Furt Beethoven 5s that ARE amazing… just not KLEIBER quality.
