de Lasalle’s performance sounded like a player piano–it was simply slow, plodding and soulless. There were moments where I thought I detected some human phrasing through the boredom, but they were fleeting.
“Afro” was, as I commented on YT, almost an uncomfortable (too fast) but thrilling ride. I’d go again. 
In spite of da fury, there was more “understanding” of what the Toccata was about in 5 seconds of CH’s performance than the whole of Frenchy’s.
You are correct; I still don’t understand the nickname, though.
