And, off topic, that Scherzo and March still pulls on my mind, just being so pianistically brilliant. Musically, I don’t know if it can stand, but its sheer pianism makes it extremely attractive.
I think S&M is one of those pieces that the performer has to inject a ton of personality into in order to make stand in a concert setting. Agreed that it’s not particularly deep or anything like that. It yearns for colorful, ballsy, and nuanced performances, and imo Koji stands up quite favorably against the likes of Horowitz. Such a rock-n-roll performance!
