hahahaha fuckkkk da vintage footage

Hahahaha, I had this vid, but deleted it a long time ago. My dislike of Hamelin runs a bit deep.

Here’s the rest of what was on the vid, for anyone who cares:

Chopin Barcarolle
Liszt Reminiscences de Norma
Alkan Concerto for Solo Piano, Op.39, Nos.8-10
Chopin/Godowsky Etude No.13
Alkan Sonatine Finale

I might have backed it up on a DVD-r, but I don’t really feel like digging through all my shit for it.

how can one dizlyk da doc? :frowning:

Well, dislike is a bit strong. Indifference is really how I feel.

I’m going to steal a quote from the British Film Critic Derek Malcolm… “A great movie is a movie I cannot bear the thought of never seeing again.”

For me, Hamelin doesn’t pass this test.

My reason for liking Hamelin is this (in no order):

Pure technic.

Repertoire; unlike msot pianists who play the same 50 pieces day in and day out, he has made a HUGE contribution to the repertoire. More and more people are now playing the music of Alkan, Godowsky, Kapustin, Medtner etc (Even pro pianists like Berezovsky).

'Interpretation: His playing of the standard repertoire is never awfull. Sometimes it is not incredibly god, but it is ok at worsts. Other times like with the Scriabin sonatas it is amazing (IMO). And for instance I like his Dukas son more than Ogdon, who is an amazing pianists. And I have no reason to asume that his playing of repertoire that no one has ever played is worse than his standard repertoire sheeyat. Especially for the more complex stuff (I think that is dearest to him). IMO his Shostakovich concertos are brilliant.

N for instance his Szymanowski sonata No.2. Richter played this sonata (no one else plays it and I belive Richter has 2 recs of it). Some people may say that Richter plays it better than :doc: . But it doesn’t really matter, Hamelin’s rec is really good, and makes a listener who hears the sonata for the first time understand what a masterpiece it is. So there may be better pianist out there, but :doc: has done A HUGE amount of work to champhion the lesser played repertoire out of there.

He haz brought me deep joy, and I think that some ways he is one of the most interesting living pianist. The repertoire he plays makes him more interesting than so many other pianists.

He has great taste for repertoire too, nothing he plays is of bad quality (repertoire vise).

HAHAHA da doc iz juz legendary n juz zimply

objectively da bez alround peniz evah tru

he haf a wikid ztylee, n diz iz da ‘let da tech do da talkin’ approach

da DOC haf a diztinctif rubato n rhythm, tiz reconizable :doc:

I have 3 Richter recs from the 50s and I have 5 others from the 80s.

I’m guessing you’ve only heard one from the 80s, because the ones from the 50s would blow your mind.

Sorry

I have heard one from the 80ths and one from the 50ths (I think) from the Kiev set. The kiev one was amazing. Does that sound correct?

Richter, Live in Bergamo, Switzerland.

05/28/1984

Szymanowski Piano Sonata No. 2

Bergamo is 1984, Kiev is 1982.

I’ll post Moscow 1954 for you

speaking of hamelin, can you please post the broadcast from last week? i would really like to hear it.

Thanks!

agreed. you instantly understand the music he plays. And he doesn’t bring his idiosyncrasies into his music. You can always guarantee his recs as an ideal interpretation, in my opinion.
I second the concert from last week, please.
Could I possibly have the richter szymanowski too? Its an amazing piece, I only discovered it from the vid of hamelin. He’s good to watch too…

oops. found it in the other forum section. thanks so much.
also, martin roscoe has recorded the szymanowski ps2 (a quick plug, as he taught my teacher). A bit slow and quiet though, for a massive piece like this.

I’ll post the Hamelin when I get around to it.

Posting a radio broadcast - because I like to do a good job - requires a bit more than uploading an mp3. It’s at least an hours’ work, and since I go to School 30 hours a week and work 26 hours a week, I just don’t feel like doing it in the little bits of free time that I have.

I’m free Sunday - it’ll get done then.
