I agree…Horowitz’ “Pictures” are too “off” for me to tolerate. I was so excited when I finally found a recording a year or so ago, but was so disappointed when I finally listened. Richter is king for me.
And never, EVER, allow yourself to listen to Olli Mustonen if you want to keep your sanity or a clean criminal record. WTF is wrong with that guy, anyway?!?!
Why would he want to arrange it? His ‘pianistic’ settings seem to detract from the rawness of Mussorgsky’s intention - I guess that’s why most people are now reverting to originals of stuff Rimsky touched up.
I’ve also trouble to listen to horowitz’s pictures. I still don’t know exactly what to think about the recording, haha.
