The Opera was sold out when Trifonov played Scrib Etudes, Scrib son 9, Beethoven 110 and Prok 8. In Norway thar’s not standard repertoire. Same number of tickets sold when Sokolov played Schubert and Beethoven

At least in Norway, I would assume that 50 % of the audience don’t even like the music. They just go because it is assumed that it is something a Ā«culturedĀ» person should do once every third year or so

No no, his programs have always looked about like they do today. Varies, but typical MAH is 1/4 standard rep and 3/4 obscurities. Programs with only :unicorn:-rep were not rare even in the 90s - and indeed they usually ended up like that if he could put them together himself. But he has always had something by Chopin, Bach, Liszt, Beethoven etc ready if presenters wanted it (which they often do).

My favourite. Imo has passages of stunning beauty, a certain chaste purity is present, in contrast to Liszt’s more indulgent approach. Quite possibly my favourite non-pimp parasheeyat, and I like it more than several Liszt ones, including his parallel fantasy on the same opera.

My favourite is the Moses, but if I’m thinking about the right one the ending has the most convincing three handed effect of all his paraphrases IMO.

The Moses ending is the best in all of his fantasies, I think (and the three hand effect there one of my favourite effects in all 88 muzic).

But the paraphrase in its entirety I’m not so sold on. The first half is a bit rambling; the theme and variations second half considerably superior imo.

Yes - I like the use in Moses better too, musically, but for the 3H effect I think the Sonnambula is more difficult to see through.

There are some really quite subtle 3h effects elsewhere in his paraphrases; the one set against octz and sixths in La Traviata caused me trouble.

Reading this discussion, I agree that the well-known penisztz could do more to promote works of relatively unknown composers.
But the first criterium to play it for a huge audience should not be, ā€œI play it because nobody else doesā€, or ā€œbecause I ought to do some neglected sheeyatā€. They should first of all love the particular work and share the enthusiasm they feel for it.

He iz very famouz fo playin da :kan: but if u look at da workz he haz recorded tiz only 3 cdz worth ov da workz he cunzidahz da kreeeem ov da kropp

He takez da ā€˜diluted interezt’ concept zeriouzly - he explored many unknown workz and felt dat hiz influence would be wazted if he played zheeyat dat wuz zecond rate
