Latimer is an exciting pianist, for sure. But he’s just a bit sloppy for my tastes.
I prefer him as a Jazz guy.
how is his KANcerto?
-da Meph
I would give it a 5/4. That review was a bit harsh.
ahahha thiz review…dous anyone hav this? i’dlyk to hear this pozziby
I do. I’ll post it.
graciaz…im excited
id have to agree with the reviewer. hamelin and ogdon, and even gibbons, blow latimer out of the water for the kancerto. his islamey is also one of the worst ive heard technically. but it seems like he knows what he wants to do, but cant do it cause of his tech.
HAHAHAHAHA
randomly i wud give da mvmt1 5/4 alzo. if u look up ‘gensui rape’ in da dicktionary da firzt reference iz to diz perf. but zadly in da mvmt3 da a bit sheeyat tech becummah too much of a diztraction
ahahahah man if diz dun zpeak TRU to u, well daim :jake
And EVEN Gibbons? I feel that Gibbons is every bit as good as Hamelin and Ogdon.
I might even like Ogdon’s and Gibbons’ better than Hamelin - they have more personality. Of course for cool, detached, perfectly fiery and technically astonishing playing, you can’t go too far wrong with Hamelin.
everything will be anzwered, pozzibly tha origin of life on earth and even da universe itzelf
when da kancerto remix dropz
True, I am VERY MUCH looking forward to that. I hope it’s live, but i doubt it.
as far as I know its not live. however i EXPECT that he will start performing it again and i vill buy a plane ticket to pozzibly the third perf
azia pozzibly???

well, i said, “even gibbons” because his is my least favorite of the 3. i like them all, but ogdon and hamelin are more of my type of playing, i guess.
i think Uchida’s Kancerto is easily the best. She plays it with the virtuosity, chaos, and fire of her Mozart sonatas.
The Woofah’s no bullshit guide to the Alkan Concerto
Hamelin is incredibly accurate and fast, but is mechanical and the piano sounds like shit. Also, Hamelin makes certain lyrical sections sound like sentimental bullshit compared to Smith. Ogdon is genius at times, but disgustingly sloppy at others. Gibbons is really solid overall - a nice blend of tech + thoughtful interp. Latimer’s Concerto is pretty embarrassing, and he would have been better off just not releasing the recording instead of writing a pathetic justification for it. He makes needless technical mistakes (as he seems well equipped to handle the piece), and the interpretation is all over the place. The only good thing I can say about it is that his playing is obviously spontaneous…but spontaneity and preparation are not incompatible! Smith has the best flow and sound in the first movement and his playing sounds really fresh, and full of contrast. The playing is such that you can listen to the first movement the whole way through without taking a break out of exhaustion. I’d say Smith gives the best overall account of the concerto (certainly my favorite).
So the ranking thus far is:
The recording we should all be waiting for is not Hamelin’s new release - but the version Egon Petri did for his Alkan BBC radio series (which is most likely sitting in some vault in London right now).

Any probability of it being reissued on CD anytime soon!?
Sadly, I don’t know if it even exists.
Berezovsky is another pianist to keep an eye on for Alkan. He’s probably the greatest ‘bravura’ pianist around today, and has a phenomenal sensitivity to voicing and touch. He seems like he’d do great things with Alkan, and something like Quasi-Faust, especially.
