Russian Businessman Boris Berezovsky, known as a staunch opponent of President Vladimir Putin has said that the killing of Chechen rebel commander Aslan Maskhadov will lead to new terror attacks and hamper any peaceful solution of the Chechen conflict.
In an interview with the Ekho Moskvy radio station, Berezovsky said that Maskhadov?s death was very good news for Putin but very bad news for Russia. The key figure in Chechnya?s peace efforts has been eliminated and this is very bad, he said.
The businessman said that Maskhadov?s death would lead to an escalation of war and an escalation of terror. He said that multiple centres of terrorism and aggression would appear, as moderate separatist Maskhadov had controlled the Chechen guerillas to a very large extent.
?He contained terror in Chechnya. Unfortunately, this factor of deterrence has ceased to exist and it will certainly lead to new terrorist attacks in Chechnya, in the Caucasus and in Russia. They will be even crueler than before,? Berezovsky said.
