What are some of your favourite film composers and scores?

My favourite composer is definitely Bernard Hermann and my favourite score of his is Vertigo. I have been quite obsessed with this film recently and aside from Kim Novak’s beauty and Hitchcock’s genius, it is largely due to the haunting music. It gives me chills. I think it’s the creepiest music I’ve heard.

After Vertigo my next favourite score is Max Steiner’s Gone with the Wind. I can’t say exactly why I love this one but the theme is just so memorable.

Another score I like is Ernest Gold’s effort for Its a mad mad mad mad world (which everyone should see if you haven’t already). It’s pure circus music, just great.

Vertigo is an absolutely wonderful film. I also like To catch a thief and North by Northwest.

For film scores… well I don’t really notice the good ones - only the bad ones :slight_smile:

john williams rips off too many “real” composers, like holst, for example. hes ok, i guess, though.

bernard hermann for vertigo and handover street. miklós rózsa for spellbound and ben-hur. ill think of a few more.

Anyone who has seen Rosemary’s baby can attest to the brilliance of Krysztof Komeda’s score.

Incredible pianist too… He died young and under-appreciated.

Pärt’s music works fucking brilliant in every movie his music’s been used for.

And tru, the Batman theme rocks 8) . Danny Elfman is actually real good tru. He did Sleepy Hollow right? I liked that ost.

Here’s a fun fact: Shostakovich composed more music for film than for any other genre! I love his music, esp for Hamlet. Truly amazing!!

Just re-watched the Thing and was struck very much by Morricone’s wonderful, minimalist score.
