Not sure how many of you know about this site, but it’s an online music notation program, runs in the browser, completely free and is ever expanding. Right now its missing some things I would like, but is still very usable and useful. It is called noteflight.com Make sure you check out my page too! Look up album scrap 1, my current project.
sounds cool, but there’s this other option, which is to use better software, like sibelius or finale, and just pirate it like most young composers do, myself included.
unfortunately, I could never get sibelius to work right (the pirated version) and I personally don’t like finale. Sibelius is awesome though, and this will be pretty close to it when they finish all the bells and whistles.
But what I like about this, is that I can go to any computer and find my files, and it saves “versions” of the file, so if I don’t like everything I did to it in the past few hours, I can just go back to a different “version” of the score. Just wish it wasn’t so laggy (then again might be my machine)
That said, I run Linux and I use Lilypond, which I feel more comfortable with. It’s a snap to use, for anyone with a background in computer programming. If you’ve no experience coding, it’ll take a while to learn and it will be very frustrating.
there’s really no discussion when it comes to sibelius’s overall setup and interface, it is far superior to finale. easier to use and slicker overall with the default settings. but there’s also no discussion when it comes to finale being overall much more powerful for achieving a vast range of notational possibilities and graphic results… it’s no coincidence that most publishing houses who don’t hardcode everything with Score are using Finale these days.
Tru. Sibelius is mostly really fast and easy to use, but when getting even a bit graphical, it’s a pain in the ass. Haven’t tried Finale though, payed for sib long ago and don’t plan on buying another notation software.
