Sorry I misread this the first time. I’m embarrassed to say it was the young Helfgott performance from Shine, which I was studying in English class. I legitimately had never even heard the names of Liszt and Rachmaninoff at that time (around age 15). I’d been more of a classical guitarist up to that point.
FUCK! legendary perf
“misread”
I wish I had some early embarrassing favourite as well, but I actually can’t think of any. The Fantaisie-Impromptu which got me on the hook was Dubravka Tomsic and the Waldstein Pletnev, both pianists (& recordings) I still like today. I guess the closest I get is spending all that money on Jando and Biret discs to discover repertoire, despite that I didn’t like Biret’s playing even then. I have all their CDs… and I have no idea why.
Another Jando and Biret collector here! Naxos introduced me to a great deal of music…because it was a great deal.
SOME recs by them are actually golden though. Jando’s Moonlight sonata is brilliant, and his Liszt TEs are great especially at their price back then.
Yes, THANK YOU. Finally someone here who realise their gensui! It’s not a particularly inspired performance of course, but interpretatively they’re revelatory. One day a pianist will come around who hears this early on in life and pick up the torch where he left it, and add the youthful energy and blinding pianism as well.
Biret I’ve never managed to get used to, but her Symphonie Fantastique (the Naxos rec, not the other one) is still better than any of the other attempts I’ve heard at it.

Hahahahah fuck!
I remember receiving this via msn
Finnish power metal seems like a good gateway-drug.
True, I used to play that mofo on guitar back in the day. Think I still could play the main riff, although pozz speed would be a bit sheeyat. For some reason, guitar rep doesn’t really fall out of my fingers, even years later (pozz cause it’s way easier than 88).
Haha, da minifeztin swore by dis album. Still do, pozz
Hair metal soloing taken to extremez. A lot more harmonically interesting den yngwie’s neoclazzical sheeyat, for moi at least.
I still like da fat swede. I remember comme introduced me to the song “judas” back in the day, which is from Eclipse (an album I’d never heard). That’s still one of my favourite Yngwie sheeyats.
Oh yeah he at his best is a very fast, clean player. But in how many different ways do I need to hear Greensleeves etc ?
Hahaha the classic synth string sound!
Amazing how when you’re not that exposed to real strings how your ears don’t register how synthy they sound.
I can’t stand the way pianos sound on most pop songs, too trebly and jangly, like in Elton John etc. and the piano sound in John Lennon’s imagine is annoying as fuck.
From memory you used to play Altitudes on piano, or am I misremembering?
I know right, that’s a pet peeve of mine. I’m listening to Judas right now, btw. Feeling nostalgic. Still remember I was in one of our epic convos on MSN when I found out Dimebag had been killed.
I think you are. I meant to do Serrana in a piano version but never got round to it.
Perpetual Burn is an amazing album. Such a tragedy what happened to Jason Becker.
The worst were the constant “jason becker has died” hoaxes. I’ve been out of the guitar world for more than 10 years, but hopefully they’ve settled down now.
Yeah he died December 2004, and actually if I remember right your name was inspired by Zakk Wylde’s column in Guitar World or something like that?
Zakk would have been top choice if Pantera were to ever semi-reform and do tribute shows but Vinnie Paul died this year, very sad.
Yeah I’ve not followed stuff in a long time tbh. It was what got me back into playing piano though. I virtually didn’t play at all between, say 16 and 25.
The guitarist in the vid I posted is rumoured, hilariously and ironically in light of forum preoccupations, to have recently transitioned to female
Yep that’s correct. I lifted it directly from Zakk Wylde’s column. I used to read that magazine every month during high school.
