does anyone know why he dropped so many pieces from his repertorie in the late 1930’s?
it would have been wonderful if he had recorded some of his Liszt pieces like the concerto and mazeppa…

…not to mention Brahms Paganini, Don Juan, Gaspard…
koji
…Chopin b minor pozz…
some pieces he played in public only a few times…
It would be very interesting to see his Leningrad programs, if they will ever be recovered. He claims he played the Rach 2 at one of those 70 concerts.
yeah i bet those Leningrad progs from the 70’s are rare indeed
I meant those from the 20’s…
hahha yeah in one of tha biographyz it zaid that in his 16 or 17th year he learned :brahmz: 2, 2 & 3, and
1 & 2
that is quite an achievment.
he is a genius
da Ho also learned all da brotha sons.
Tru, I think I read he could just play any sonata on demand. Usually did it during convo’s or something “And what about this sonata” blabla, you know, the typical pianist arrogancy
hahaha da
IMO, I think he learnt most of the hardcore pianist rep but is only able to demonstrate certain snippets at will. I certainly remember watching his film The Last Romantic and that very gensui Scriabin Vers la Flamme awhile back. Both consistently shows his inconsistency with the printed page.
But when all’s said and done, his pianistic life is still a legacy waiting to be emulated, or bettered by future generations.
I think with the greats, they remember mostly everything, but are still prone to a few memory slips. Even gieseking was not infallible.
