What was the programme for Kapell’s 1941 debut? and is there a complete recording of it in existence? I have some tracks which are apparently from the recital (sounds like acetate) including Albeniz Triana and Liszt HR6 just wondering if they’re authentic.
They’re authentic. As far as I know, there is no complete recording of the recital.
I’m sure Koji knows the complete program.
If I may be allowed to quote myself:
Soon Kapell was focused on his impending Town Hall début, feverishly practicing what would be a formidable program, even for a seasoned concert stage veteran. The concert opened up with the extremely difficult Prelude and Fugue in C sharp minor, Well Tempered Clavier: Book One (one of the two five-voice fugues in the entire Well Tempered Clavier) of Bach, followed by the Suite in A minor, BWV 818. Next came the difficult Brahms Piano Sonata No. 1 in C major, Op. 1. After intermission, he plunged into a group of Chopin pieces: the Ballade No. 2 in F major, Op. 38, the Nocturne in B major, Op. 62, No. 1; two mazurkas and the Barcarolle, Op. 60. Next came the Rachmaninoff Prelude in E flat major, Op. 23, No. 6, Medtner’s “Fairy Tale” in B flat minor, Shostakovich Preludes Op. 34, Nos. 5, 10, and 24, and finally he ended with Albéniz’s “Evocacion” and the immensely challenging “Triana” [from Books One and Two of Iberia, respectively]. “It was a brave and unusual program for a nineteen year old boy to undertake,” and interestingly, highlights the artistic affinities that defined Kapell throughout the rest of his career.
The recordings are indeed, authentic and as you surmised, taken from acetates. I need to ask Allan Evans if any other performances were recorded from that recital–he has restored an acetate containing excerpts of Beethoven Op. 13, which have never been released.

Since it wasn’t signed, I wasn’t interested until I saw the program–prokofiev EIGHTH sonata? Wonder if it was the 7th instead.

In listening class, we had Kapell today. Passed around the bio by Tim Page for one. Man, this dude was just too unbelievable.
Our teacher is befriended with Kapell’s wife and grandson, and got a bootleg performance of his Rach 3 right before his death. Koji probably has it, quite damn amazing too. Not as insanely intense(more held back mostly :p) at some moments, but still enough
Tim’s book has a lot of great photos; the Rach 3rd should be released along with the other Australian performances soon.
Anyone know a good place to buy the Page book? I’ve tried abebooks, Amazon, etc and they’re all horrendously expensive.
I’d just buy it from IPAM directly, I know for a fact they have scores of extra copies just lying around.

I’ve read most of it and have thoroughly enjoyed it. his work ethic is amazing, you can just hear in his playing how in shape his technique is. I admire that greatly.
