Then again, given that I’d probably only go to a concert to hear a concerto and leave before the second half, maybe it’s not such a bad idea to squeeze in more piano playing.
But then you run the threat of hearing some bon-bon rubbish, especially from the Questionable Taste Group.
Bash-kirov can be nasty while teaching, but his musical ideas are most interesting, intelligent and always fresh. What he wants is always concrete and effective, at least it seemed that way when I attended his masterclasses. What a difference from the esoteric bullshit of the Pires “masterclasses”.
Exactly.
This is why I only attend concerti for pianists who I can’t see in recital, or pianists who are a “favourite”.
Even a pianist I follow like Debargue I won’t see in Ravel G major for example.
lol yeah I’ve gotta say that from a distance he gives that impression – hard to deal with / pushy. Is that Tough-Love? IDFK but I know I don’t want it near me
I don’t know who Jacques Rouvier is but I will venture to say that that’s not so many
I wonder if any pianist alive today has taught as many pianists (through master classes) as Bashkirov has. Guy appears tireless. He even deigns to berate single-digit children for their unchiselled skills. I wish we had secret CCTV-quality footage of Bashkirov foaming in a tantrum as Volodos does nothing audibly wrong.
On another note – LMFAO at the new Hyperion Records YT upload which – ‘This video contains content from HyperionRecordsLimited, who has blocked it on copyright grounds.’’
He also taught Hélène Grimaud (who was in love with him as a teen), add that to Fray, Volodos and the rest and it’s a pretty damn good stable of pianists.
I’ve heard good things about him too, but have never looked in to him. I have this, that’s all.

Played on a reproduction of a 1799 Walter fortepiano, from the workshop of Christoph Kern.
His latest CD of Prok’s Sonatas 2,6 & 8 is pretty good. He plans on recording the rest of em’. If someone can explain how to share a link in a similar fashion to the way iamcanadian does it, I’d be more than happy to share it.
Okay, because he’s playing here on the 26th and it’s a pretty cheap ticket, so I thought I’d go tape it if there was any interest.
However, given the response I think I’ll save my money.
