I agree with both of you. Those are exceptional pianists, which perhaps prove the ‘rule’. For me Sofronitsky goes into this bracket too.
Yes, definitely here too
Anyone have this Zelikman CD?

Really nice Haydn
Gosh. From the first glance I thought this was Brew’s list of November piano recitals.
I don’t see anything to add immediately, but maybe some more clear borders should be made to define what is meant with a Soviet pianist? The Rubinsteins both died before the SU ever was a thing for instance, and while Volodos was born in it his career didn’t begin until after its collapse. And since you’ve included Maryla Jonas for instance - a Polish born pre-SU pianist - maybe Arthur Rubinstein should be in there as well? I don’t know, maybe just stick to Russian pianists regardless of date of birth? Or just eastern block pianists who made a career within the SU? I’ve randomly never heard of half of these mofos.
To inspire controversy, start a fist fight and in general make people angry, here is da xsdc pick of the GUD ones - from those I’ve actually heard play.
Enlighten me as to who you’d include in addition (or who you’d remove if you want to be that way).

Haha yeah Brew can cover contemporary pianism in one month of recitals ![]()
I forgot to remove some pianists from that list (Jonas, Ogdon, some others). But yeah the SU / Russian definition will need to be made. I’m inclined to exclude anyone born there who left young, and include anyone who moved there young to study through maturity. That’s why I had Nojima, Son, Lupu…all of whom blossomed there.
A lot of them are on my YT channel. 4 or 5 are Central Music School teachers who didn’t record much or at all (Zelikman, Artobolevskaya, Kestner, Bobovich, Timakin) but who all have pedagogical links to pianists we listen to like Pletnev and Ashkenazy.
Towards the end I just started to throw in all Russians (well ok aside from Lola Astanova and Anastasia Huppmann).
Annoyingly some of these outstanding pianists hardly recorded.
Definitely not removing any but if you don’t know I would add:
Konstantin Adzhemov
Vladimir Belov
Ekaterina Derzhavina
Alexander Jocheles
Evgeny Lieberman
Inna Malinina (I will upload some more of her. Goldenweiser pupil).
Alexander Melnikov
Isaac Mikhnovsky
Vera Razumovskaya
Abram Shatskes (Medtner pupil)
Leo Sirota (though I guess you know him, and maybe he shouldn’t be in this list)
Rosa Tamarkina (I guess you know her too)
Thanks for Syomin!
Thanks! No I’m not really familiar with any of those. I have heard Derzhavina’s French Overture - which is good - and I have the CDs Vista Vera have issued with Tamarkina but I’ve never gotten round to listen to them. Another friend is very fond of Melnikov as well and I have a vague memory of having heard something superb in Scriabin from him on youtube, but I might be thinking about someone else. Either way I definitely have homework to do here.
How ironic that he plays liszt
Tamarkina is great, shame she died so young.
I have to say that I find this performance to be very captivating and I’m not a huge fan of
's opera paraphrases.
Derzhavina and Melnikov are the only ones still playing and they’re both quite young and (more importantly) appear to be the sort who get better as they age.
Sirota’s recordings were released by Arbiter. The rest (of the ones I suggested) are from old Soviet recordings, most just at-home transfers from LPs. Belov for example has just 3 or 4 short extant recordings but he still comes through, and Shatskes only recorded his teacher Medtner but the same applies. Adzhemov was a very nice surprise for me last year. He studied with Igumnov and made a memorable recordings of Rachmaninoff’s first sonata (premiered by Igumnov).
I like Derzhavina, a few of her recordings have been posted her in the past.
Fantastic performance IMO!
Kocsis was studying in Russia?
No that was my error in forgetting to remove it from the list (I had added extra ones to note birthdays).
Could someone please remind me which piece this is at 1:00 into this video? I want to hear it again but can’t remember
