i like the rubinstein because it’s one of the most creative renderings
i’ve actually never heard the sultanov,
i just assume it’s sheeyat b/c of the kritty endorsement

The Sultanov performance at the Cliburn competition was insane. Easily one of the best I’ve ever heard.
Rubinstein live in Italy is a bit weak… The Ruby Studio rec is MUCH better.
i’m surprised i haven’t heard that richter… is it commercially available? (googles)
Sultanov (live at Cliburn), broken strings and all, gotta love it, and Horowitz are my favs
I prefer the intense versions.
Kapell is just perfect, the way he keeps his focus and rock solid tech throughout the whole thing is insane, and Richter is what you expect from Richter, his ending octaves are probably some of the most controlled you’ll ever hear.
Also, I’ve heard the original version of a live Horowitz Meph, the one that got issued on CD is a cut up from several performances. The flow of the original is 100x better.

edit oh and does anyone possibly have a recording of someone playing the complete Busoni transcription as it is?
Here’s a recording of the Busoni version by his pupil Egon Petri. I don’t think this has ever been issued on CD.
Btw, Petri was a very young 75 when he recorded this performance. I just love the swagger in his playing.

If you agree with all the recordings above EXCEPT Sultanov, that seems to imply that you actually disagree with the recommendation of Sultanov.

my theory is that somebody played it rather slow on a pianodisc or disklavier and sped it up and doctored it in midi format.
