Dear Friends,
Here is a recording which I hope you will enjoy:
Mahler, Symphony #3 (Beatrice Krebs, alto w.Westminster Choir & NY Philharmonic/ Mitropoulos. Rec. 4/15/56 Carnegie Hall, in concert. Total time: 78’21’
Mitropoulos had a very vigorous, virtuosic approach to this work and his players were in their prime. This recording bristles with vitality and the violin solos have a certain intoxicating quality to them which has drawn me back to this recording many times. There is a wonderful ‘fantastico’ sense of fantasy and mystery which lets characters arise from the distance. What I also appreciate about this recording is one of the clearest pictures of the early Carnegie acoustic, which was warm and glorious and resonant. I have heard many Mahler 3 recordings, and this one is somehow my favorite, even if Mitropoulos makes some cuts in the first movement. I look forward to your opinions or feedback! I have also recently heard Kubelik and Bernstein.
