"Brendel, of course!
How controversial… How often have I heard people saying that he plays very dry, emotionless and is one of the worst famous pianists. What a nonsense!
I personally think he is one of the greatest genuises ever. He plays in a way some people love, but others hate. The way he builds up a piece is amazing. He digs into the heart of the piece and truly understands it (I think). That’s also why some people don’t like him. He is the type of pianist who thinks that a piece should tell a pianist what he or she has to do with it, rather than the pianist telling the piece how it should be performed or the composer telling the pianist how the piece should be played.
I agree with some people that his playing is quite straightforward, but that’s just character. He was the direct opposite person of Glenn Gould IMO.
It’s true that in Europe he is appreciated much more than outside Europe. Here in the Netherlands his concerts were sold out about 3 months before the concert. I don’t understand why so many people, mainly Americans, don’t like his playing. In some way it seems that Americans prefer either tremendous technique (Hamelin?) or extreme emotion and sentimental playing (Horowitz?). "
