There are some brilliant ideas there, and some parts that have cool sounding pianowriting but lack memorable melodic material, I suppose this is always the risk with improv because you can rely on core techs and harmonies but you can’t rely upon inspiration striking all the time. This is why Kat’s ā€˜composed improvs’ based on stellar pre-established melodic material fleshed out in new pianistic clothing seems like a great idea.

Yes, this is similarly why writing paraphrases is a winner. You can use established techniques to create great pianistic effects, and you’re working from memorable melodic material which you get absolutely for free.
