Recordings of Sergei Kursanov transcriptions are extremely rare-elusive.

Kursanov’s transcriptions are sickness. It seems that Nikolai Tokarev has recorded the Sarasate-Kursanov : Zingeunerweisen. But how are we going to find it?

What will blow your proverbial socks off on disc one is the Kursanov (b.1947) transcription of Rimsky-Korsakov’s most famous orchestral piece, Scheherezade. Kursanov is a genius to make the piano speak as a full orchestra, but the absolute surprise is pianist Nikolai Tokarev, born in 1983 in Moscow. His piano teacher was Anna Kantor, who also taught Evgeny Kissin. After hearing this, I only wish we had the whole recital on disc that he performed at his first appearance at the Ruhr Festival. I listen to a lot of pianists and want to say: keep your eyes/ears on this one!
