…and that this precisely what I’ve been trying to say incidentally. I don’t get the plan/meaning/intent when I listen to a Medtner sonata, it just sounds like ramblings around an idea or a musical “vision”. To my ears it could in other words just as well have been written by an AI who’s learned to imitate music in the style we call Medtner, while in the Liszt sonata say there’s a clear musical narrative and I can make sense of how the composer thought and what he’s trying to do.
But I was still very young when I really tried to penetrate these. I’ll sit down with Op.5 with score in hand over the next few days, and we’ll see if I can make sense of it that way. It’ll also be the third time I hear the work in very short time, which is probably also good.
