this is a request (sorabji)

I’m intrigued by this guy but nothing i’ve heard has really blown me out of the water. Besides the Opus Fuckstickum, hit me with some interesting Sorabji. Perhaps some of his other shorter pieces or even some non-piano rep if anybody has any. Twould be cooool

the bach chromatic fantasy transcription is ok

I love the Pastiche on the Habanera from Carmen, check it on youtube.

The 1st sonata is - I belive - on youtube.

check out jonathan powell’s website. also, check here:

the first sonata is my favourite. Maybe that’s because it’s the only one I can really follow and understand lol…

but zeriouzly, da zpanizh rhapzody and da chop waltz tran are pozz da only zheeyat dat’z worth lizten to

da 1zt zonata wuz ok, but doesn’t really give u a reason to listen to it again

try Sorabji 100 Transcendental Studies. They are monstrously difficult, just way above da pimp TEs. da music itself is gensui to some extent.

:dong:

Sorabji:Fantaiettina sul nome illustre dell’egregio poeta Hugn MacDiarmid ossia Christopher Grieve

quiet interesting…

the 4 pastiches, 1st sonata, 4th sonata if youre brave, fantasie espagnole, in the hothouse and toccata, and the solo concerto are all good. if you like slow, ambient, calm music in the vein of late scriabin, check out gulistan and djami. i really love those two.

thanks for the input dudes. i even checked out the complete TEs from my institution’s music library and spent a couple days leafing through them, they are a bizarre mix of early 20th century expressionism and some sort of premonition of Ligeti. wierd, not all interesting, although there were some gems I think. I dunno if it’d be worth spending all the practice time learning only a few minutes of music for a couple of them though.

i have hamelin’s handwritten edition of the first 18 TEs. anyone wants?
and hamelin’s rec of Sadko pastiche with ullen’s of the two chopin minute waltz pastiches. nothing else though. i would like to see people playing them live >_> nothing like that’s ever attempted down here.

jredmond, which school/institution do you go to?

i am a UC Berkeley alum; that’s where I checked out the sorabji. They have a boatload of his scores. I’m now at Cornell.

i’ve now started on a research project on sorabji’s two pastiches on the chopin minute waltz and i need the sheet music for the later one - does anyone have it? I only have the recordings and this project involves comparing the changes in philosophy and context in sorabji’s life between the two and how they are influences on his compositional technique.

help, anyone?
