Which Concert Pianist is the best at Jazz?

Both improvised Jazz and ‘Jazzical’ written works like Kapustin etc.

Who do you think does it best?

There is an as large discrepancy between jazz and classical as there is between soccer and snooker.

I am a living proof of that.

Of the living ones? Maybe Boyan Vodenitcharov. The guy’s a musical chameleon!

???

Probably Keith Jarrett. He’s top tier in jazz, and has made some pretty decent classical recs of Bach and Shostakovich P&Fs, among other things.

Thibaudet (Bill Evans album etc)?

How about Andre Previn? I like his jazz and classical stuff.

Yeol Eum Son’s played a bunch of Kapustin. I’d trust her with anything after her great Petrushka

Does Kapustin really count as jazz?

hmm I don’t know, probably not. Last time I enjoyed jazz was with the old Five Spot recordings (Dolphy), so it’s been ages and Kapustin doesn’t sound like that.

Don’t get me wrong, Kapustin’s great. But I don’t know if it’s really jazz.

If jazz is written down - it’s classical music in a jazz idiom. Hence : Jazzical.

Some pianists might have awesome jazz feel but are rubbish at improvising, they’re the ones I’d suggest this stuff to.

Incidentally, my favourite jazzical piece isn’t by Kapustin, it’s this :

So fucking tasty.
