Cliburn - Gaspard d.l.n.
R. Serkin - any Rach concerto or sonata
C. Arrau - Rach 2nd sonata
Argerich - Beethoven 4th and 5th concerti (who knows maybe she’d still do those someday); Brahms concerti

Supposedly Serkin played the 3rd Rachmaninoff Concerto and supposedly there is a recording - pretty freaking rare though. Again though, it might not be him. Sure doesn’t seem like his kind of rep.

And Argerich learned the Brahms 2nd concerto while she was studying with Gulda. Not sure she ever played it though.

BUMP. I’ve searched something here, so I found this interesting post.
Just want to say a few things:
To Chris:
Gilels was apparently thinking of learning and recording for DG all 3 Brahms sonatas and Beethoven no. 1 and 32, but then he, unfortunately, died… :frowning:

To Aries:
-According to Argerich’s repertoire, she played Beethoven 4th and 5th Concerto… You can also hear few clips from PC 4 on her documentary… (I forgot the name of it)
-I’ve read in Serkin’s biography that (if memory serves me well) he played Tchaikovsky 1st and Rachmaninov 2nd concerto when he was young… I think it’s the same case with Arrau and those two concertos…

Another interesting tidbit:

Gould apparently liked the Rachmaninoff Paganini Variations. Probably would have recorded it too.

Speaking about Gould:
Gould was once recording something and in the pause, spoke with one producer something about Chopin… He asked him why he doesn’t play Chopin? Gould said something and played one Waltz with his arrangements… After he finished, he said something like “Why I would play this?”… Others almost “killed” that producer because he didn’t “accidentally” recorded that…

Damn, what a shame!!! Great story, Kreso.

Apparently, Gould also wanted to record some Mozart Sonatas on a tack-hammer piano, but the company refused. I guess they were funny enough on CD318 to begin with…
