Recommendations for where to start with the string quartet repertoire? I am not that familiar with the “genre”
No.1 is staple rep.
If you’re starting with Beethoven, then if you like Richter’s way with Schubert, go for the Vegh Quartet (stereo version). A must hear. For something with a lot of energy and brio, but perhaps cold in precision, kind of like Weissenberg, then the Emerson Quartet. For something with a lot of color without downplaying the energy, then the Smetana Quartet.
