I normally get to about 5 or 10 mins with any longah ZNOREABJI then give up, as to me it just sounds like a disordered, incoherent quasi-improv.

Yeah but Iād argue that thereās an order and a succession to the Chop Preludes, which you donāt have with Schumannās Op.12 for instance. IIRC some from Op.28 are even marked attacca at the end.

Actually thatās a bad example, Op.12 arenāt entirely separated either (I would also argue)
But take a random Greg or Mendy book of pizzahs w/o lyrics then. Thereās nothing linking the individual pieces, theyāre just published together for convenience
