Not a big Mahler fan, but I’m an Ancerl fan and that’s more than enough to make me appreciate this recording. The power of this performance is undeniable.

Thanks for the upload. I like Ancerl, but which orchestra is it? Toronto or CPO?
Czech Phil.
Big Mahler fan here! Thanks for this. I was actually only familiar with Ancerl by way of some early concerto recordings with Richter. I didn’t even know that Ancerl conducted Mahler symphonies. As for the 9th, I’ve heard Zander, Walter, and Karajan, each very powerful and convincing indeed. Zander’s live account from London is quite astonishing in clarity of intention. Karajan’s is a special case: I am not at all a fan of Karajan, but this recording was truly of a marvelous sheen. Walter’s reading was earthy and instinctual.
I’ve heard all of those, and Ancerl is my No. 1.
Ancerl is actually one of my 10 favourite conductors, even though he’s not very well known. You should look into his recordings a bit. His Shostakovich is some of the best I’ve heard, and he’s probably my favourite Dvorak conductor.
