Comments from those that have heard?
imo, rather thick orchestration (but that might be him, havent heard much else of his). Good piano writing for a cellist, occasionally tuneful.
I think I like 4 the best, 3 least.
Any other decent recordings besides Ortiz?
blumental and freire have great recordings of the 5th and 1st, respectively. ortÃz just doesnt cut it sometimes, but she is all we have for 2-4, as far as i know. these are really great concertos though. my favorite is the 1st.
true I have heard no1 by Freire, and twuz great. Love this kind of music
villa lobos was certainly an adventurous compser, as these concertos prove- i’d much rather listen to these than the solo piano music, however.
