iā€™ve heard pi-AN-ist before, but I say PI-an-ist.

I still need to watch Mad Men, but I always try to watch shows past the pilot because a lot of shows I like only get good from ep 3 or 4

R rolled at the back of the throat, singers seem to roll it at the front of the tongue, like russians (and I think italians?).
Actually I asked a voice major this question today and she said itā€™s to do with vocal technique; apparently itā€™s difficult to get the Rs at the back and still sing properly.
