I do think Feinberg has more imagination than Gould not just in Bach’s music. Some might argue Gould’s technique is more even than Feinberg, but who gives a shit. If the playing sounds good, it sounds good. The same goes to the opposite. Horowitz, Rubinstein, Arrau, Serkin and to name a few don’t play everything evenly 24/7, but what considers them great is how they deliver the message across the boundary and how they interpret the music of the great masters to the audience worldwide. This is what I sincerely believe Feinberg has this charisma but not Gould (under certain circumstances).

Comme: I love Ziff. Alot. I think he’s probably the greatest Liszt pianist ever. I thoroughly enjoy his Totentanz, Annees, Hungarian Rhapsodies, GGC, Polonaise 2 and MANY other things.

Maybe you’re confused… My statements about Ziff are simply that I don’t consider him a particularly deep pianist. I don’t enjoy his Beethoven or much of his Chopin - though there are small exceptions.

I consider him one of the great showmen without a doubt. And I love the fact that he was content to be just that, instead of striving for some higher form of art and becoming a boring pianist as a result - like many do(kissin? Brendel?).

I love him for what he was… but as great as he was, I don’t think he is in the same category of pianists as say, Richter, Gilels, Rubinstein, Horowitz, Arrau, Serkin etc. They are serious pianists who strive to express themselves through the music, while Ziff mainly expresses the music with his technique. At least that’s my opinion.

However, I don’t know why I need to keep defending this view to you. You don’t even like music. You like virtuoso athletic pianism and have no respect for depth of thought or subtlety of touch. Thus, the true beauty of music is lost to you. This explains why you have no trouble listening to LL but i doubt you could sit through and entire Mozart symphony or a Beethoven String quartet.

If there are no technical feats to ‘respec’ in the music - things that are readily measured with a stopwatch - you are lost. The beauty of the wrinting and the subtlety of the interpretation can’t convince you of the greatness of the music and the pianism.

No, that would require you to open your mind and your heart and allow the music to touch you.

This is too good not to quote. This is exactly my thoughts on GC well (except the greatest Liszt pianist part).

I listened to two recordings of Après une lecture du Dante earlier today - Arrau/Philips and Cziffra/Turin - and Arrau’s felt very music centered while Cziffra’s felt very piano centered. I did prefer Cziffra however. It’s not what I’m looking for in the work, but he’s part of that rare breed of musicians where virtuosity itself has become an art form, and between these two Cziffra’s artistic take was more compelling to me than Arrau’s musical one.
