I dunno. I always have a hard time believing Rubinstein’s sincerity when he makes grand statements. I always feel some personal agenda lurking behind. Although I believe what he said about the teenage Gilels, probably because he was not at peak fame at the time.

My piano tuner from my teenage years saw Sgouros live as a teen and said it was terrible. I remember cvx_melody uploaded some video of him around the same time and it confirmed what my tuner had said.
Hm, yes I won’t argue with him. But this Rach-3 is really quite unbelievable for a boy of 14. It’s far and away better than anything Kissin did at that age.

No, you’re right. There was definitely something there at that age. He certainly doesn’t sound like a 14 year old. Although either the balance is off in the recording or he played sotto voce. My tuner saw him later, around age 17 I think.
Rubinstein said to more promising pianists that they would develop into “the finest pianists of their time”, another example is Joseph Alfidi. Started out as an exceptional child prodigy but is now totally forgotten… somehow he never really made it.
