Never heard of this!
Boris Papandopulo is Croatian 20th century composer, I think the best one. He wrote cycle “8 Studies (Etudes)” for piano which is one of the best pieces in our literature.
Andrey Gugnin played all of those. This first one is particuraly famous.
If anyone wants, I can find some recording of other studies and scan the sheets.
Thinking about this… Hamelin and Hough pretty much covers it, but aside from what they’ve done - and aside from just taking a Chopin Prelude and similar - I love the two little pieces Cherkassky used to play by Hajime Okumura which would work beautifully as encores. There are several BRAHMS/Busoni Chorale preludes which are wonderful too (though pozz entering the banned profound territory). Mozart’s Eine Kleine Gigue… Guiomar Novaes had a really strange favourite encore by a chap named Louis Vuillemin too. If you’ve heard it you’ll never forget it, but… that’s not necessarily a good thing.
Spanish rep has lots to offer too. de Falla’s transcriptions in particular used to be quite popular, but I don’t remember seeing anyone offer them in decades now. When it comes to insanely virtuosic paraphrazheeyat my favourites were written by my friend Pär here in S, but just about any Strauss paraphrase works too. Preferably Friedman’s glorious Frühlingstimmen which no one plays.
Tru, here’s a pozz little known Spanish suggestion and I’m going to call it a day
