Evgeny Kissin - Repertoire

My hobby to investigate repertoire of some pianists brought me to Evgeny Kissin. I’m sure there are some works I forgot/don’t know, so if you think of those, just tell me. Composers are written in chronological order.

I’m not sure about Scriabin 5th Sonata (which I think I saw on some list) and Brahms 3rd Violin Sonata, which I think he played with Spivakov (it was probably on YouTube).

Mendelssohn - also the little Etude VH played. F minor, Op. onehundredsomething-b.

I’m listening to an EK recital right now. He owns the Schubert/Godowsky - ridiculously well played. I would have made a YT video of it tonight if I hadn’t discovered my CD-R of his best performance has a glitch a few seconds in. :rage:

To put things in perspective, at Kissin’s present age, we would be talking about Vladimir Horowitz as early Horowitz of the Yale archive era.

Surprised by how little Rachmaninoff there is by Kissin.

Alas, a frustrating artist for me. Not too many highs, not too many lows. And that tone? The Soviet Serkin.

All true & fair. I thought he was a human midi-generator essentially in his youth, and a SNN uglifier after that, but I’ve really enjoyed his playing since around 2012 (and a few things before then too). I think he’s finally living up to his early promise.

@xsdc this one in A minor?

Right, yes.

He Talks about playing the Bach D Minor Concerto in an interview in youth. Also, that Bach is favorite composer though… seems like only transcriptions making into his programs so far.

It’s a shame actually… I’d love to hear him play untranscribed Bach.

He said something like he wouldn’t like to play Bach on modern piano…

Which one? Rec?

Carnegie 1997

oh brother

Now that would be a composer I’d like to hear him play, much more than typical Romantic composers.

:rectum:

If he hasn’t been convinced by the wealth of great Bach recordings out there that it in fact does work… can’t he see it as a transcription? It feels like a double standard to avoid playing harpsichord music on the piano while happily performing organ music on it. Besides Bach would have been the last to object, he shuffled around music from one instrument to another all the time himself.

Agreed, a lot of it was composed for “keyboard” with no specific instrument in mind anyway. And the music is too great to neglect. Several great pianists have struggled with this in the past (ABM, Arrau), but Bach on piano can work well indeed if it’s in the hand of a capable pianist who finds a good balance - “good” in my opinion meaning avoiding excesses in pedaling, tempo and dynamics and avoiding the idiotic staccato-mania of GG.

One thing I am reacting to is the Godowsky rep. He obviously knows about Godowsky, and he is only playing one arrangement by him. Does this mean that he believes that only one of his arrangements is worth playing? Just something I was thinking about

I don’t know, but I wouldn’t think so. It’s fringe rep. Also not the kind of music I normally associate with EK.

The MM is really ingenious though. More complex than the Rosamunde I’m playing now.

I am just wondering why he doesn’t feel the need to make Godowsky more famous. I honestly believe it is strange

Bearing in mind this is only rep he’s performed. He undoubtedly would play Bach at home, pozz has no wish to perform it, or insecure with it, who knows.

Guys, I’m curious if anyone has Kissin recital program he played I think around 1998, with Beethoven 101, Brahms 119 and Liszt Sonata?
