It was thanks to him that I got seriously interested in classical piano.
I went to several of his concerts when I was very young (I remember a stunning solo La Valse long before it became popular to play that version) and met him several times. A good friend of mine, a Brazilian pianist, studied with him in Maastricht before he moved to Brazil (I think Meinders’ wife is/was Brazilian). He introduced me to him after a concert, I went to his house in The Hague. I remember he had a full concert grand there, and an impressive collection of Horowitz LPs. I lost contact and I have no idea why he never became world-famous, because he certainly seemed to be a top-pianist at the time. He is indeed extremely gifted and a true “Romantic”.
