Is it really as good as everybody says? My favorites are Celibidache, Mengelberg, and Stokowski.
Markevitch and Mavrinsky are wonderful in this symphony. Very different approach than the guys you mentioned, though. I am a huge Stokowski fan, but find him too over the top for Tchaik.
I can post the Dorati / Minneapolis Symphony recording if anyone’s interested?
The Dorati is good, Mravinsky is great.
My favourite though, is Fricsay. I’ll post it asap.
Wow! That would be very exciting! Thanks yo.
I’ll try to find my Markevitch as well. The Dorati would be great- wonderful underrated conductor who’s beginning to receive more recognition. His Tchaikovsky ballets are incomparable (he started as a ballet conductor for the Ballet Russe when they toured in the 30’s after Diaghelev’s death.)
I believe I have Dorati’s complete Tchaik symphonies.
I will post if there’s any interest.
What year is the Dorati from?
Am very interested. Anyone who has Ormandy’s/Philadephia Orch’s tchaik Syms? I only have an old RCA LP of the 6th, and it’s beautiful.
I would assume 60s or so
Hmm! That might be interesting! What I’m looking for especially is a recording that doesn’t make any cuts in the 4th mvt. I like all the episodes!
