Chopin, nah. Far too many lightweights fink dat Fantasie Impromptu is da hardest or some shizzle. An dey fink dat the Revolutionary etude is some sorta impossible piece. Chopin is more offen overrated in difficulty than underrated.

I mean Chopin Sonatas are hard but aint underrated in difficulty becuz dey arent dat well known. Da ppl dat know the Sonatas know dat dey are bitches to master.

Scriabin, well, da ppl who know about him or play him also know dat he got the hardest sonata cycle known ta man. Don fink itz possible to overrate Scriabin’s difficulty.

Liszt difficulty iz overrated tho. When ppl yap about Liszt difficulty dey always be referrin to shizzle like HR2 or La Campanella, which aint nothing compared ta Berlioz-Liszt Beethoven-Liszt, Scherzo und March, etc. dat nobody talks about.

Now Schumann, his difficulty be insane underrated. Prolly cuz none of his pieces sound that hard. Kriesleriana iz prolly harder than 90% of all Liszt pieces.

Alkan is incredibly difficult. I’ve never looked at the Symphony, but the first movement of the piano sonata has one of the hardest passages I’ve ever seen in piano (the leaps just before the first repeat). Though I’ve noticed this is highly personal too. Another “hardest passage I’ve seen” is in the 2nd mvt of Liszt’s transcription of the Pastoral symphony, but when I showed it to a friend here who’s a professional pianist he played it immediately at sight. “Is this it? Gosh yes, very difficult”. &#%#%#…

The tempo honestly wasn’t the problem for me - there were a few spots where I wasn’t quite strong enough, but aside from some blurriness there it entered Doc tempo pretty much on its own, but I was completely crushed under those double leaps. I have never practiced any passage in any work as much as I did with that - daily work over many months - but I never really was close. The choice I had was to either maintain tempo and be guaranteed to trip, roll and crash, or to lower (halve, really) the tempo at those bars and play it securely. Hamelin feels humane in the passage since he uses pedal and divides them up in groups, by which you can use an easier fingering, but how Libetta does what he does in the Naples video is beyond me.

Which precise passage is this – can you snap/screenshot the bars? I confess I’m curious, and haven’t been able to locate it myself (unless I’m looking near the wrong repeat).
