Name some pianists who SHOULD play more of certain repertoire.
Also name pianists who play certain repertoire yet should steer clear of it.
For example -
Volodos SHOULD play Rach son 2 - absolutely tailor made for him, yet he never has.
Hamelin SHOULDN’T play Schubert - not because he isn’t good at it, but because he is quite good but not exceptional, it’s a bit of a waste of time; his pianism is more suited to exploring richly textured complex music like Feinberg, Godowsky etc.
Definitely agree on Hamelin. That one sprang immediately to mind.
Not sure about Volodos in Rachmaninoff. His sound worked extremely well in the third concerto, but I like more rawness in the Second sonata. I also thought his sound was wrong for Beethoven C minor concerto.
Actually been thinking about Vol and rach sons meself, strange that he hasn’t done it, I totally agree with you that he’s a perfect match.
Randomly would love to hear him do da ravel gaspah as well, n medtnah.
Yuja’s problem is she doesn’t live with the repertoire she plays long enough, since she learns and performs things so quickly. I actually think Trifonov shouldn’t play Chopin, that second sonata was bad enough to make me never wanna see him live again.
