Personnel: Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Donald Byrd, Kenny Dorham (trumpet); Sonny Clark, Herbie Hancock (piano); Butch Warren (bass); Billy Higgins, Tony Williams (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on June 14, 1962 The first five tracks constitute a session from 1963 that featured veterans McLean, Donald Byrd, and Butch Warren with the new recruits Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams. Williams, who, astoundingly, was in his mid-teens at the time, makes his recording debut here, just a couple of months before joining Miles Davis’ group for which he would become legendary. The second half is from a session the year before with Kenny Dorham in place of Byrd and Sonny Clark and Billy Higgins filling in the rhythm section.
