Bolet did have an incredible technique, but a lot of his recordings are from his 60’s and 70’s, where his control hadn’t diminished, but his facility was considerably weakened. If you can find his Prokofiev concerti from the 60’s or his live Rachmaninoff 3 from 1968, you’ll here what he was capable off. He did hit a lot of clinkers in live performance, although it was nothing compared to the catastrophes of John Ogdon in full flight. Although Ogdon still sounded fully professional even when in trouble- just that he chose astonishing tempi in live concerts.
when was Bolet in his prime? The 1938 Carnegie Debut?
Probably- since Rachmaninoff was in the audience for his Carnegie debut and liked it (according to Bolet). He still played very well in the early 80’s when I heard him.
