Have u guys ever heard anything really gud from Schnabel? I don’t quite get the obsession some people have for him.
His beethoven sonatas.
E.g. The third movement of the Waldstein is amazing.
I never heard a single note played beautifully or thoughtfully by Leslie Howard.
His via crucis was thoughtful.
That’s probably the recording of his I listen to the most.
His Norma was also good.
Liszt was a bit mischievous in some of his markings in that fantasy, the agitato for example completely goes against the original, but Howard’s interp is overall pretty true to Bellini from memory.
I need to check it out…
When I was preparing for both pimp comps the only available recs of some works were by the lesbo… and they were played in a completely nonsensical trashy manner. Like his Weinen Klagen prelude and Der Nachtliche Zug and both versions of La Lugubre Gondola.
Pretty much everything I’ve heard of his is pretty fucking horrid.
With all due respect.
For the prelude and lugubre gondolas you need Fiorentino, Howard can’t compare.
I actually quite liked his Liszt Sonata. He sightread a lot of the Liszt pieces which he recorded (cant blame him when there are that many pieces), but I think he has lived with the Sonata and studied it. He doesn’t hold back in it either, but is true to the score re. tempi, dynamics, articulation…
He found quite a few mistakes in the available editions and so went back to the manuscript to prepare his own which is now published. He has also recorded quite an interesting video about interpreting the piece on YouTube.
Incidentally, somebody recorded the original ending of the piece as a bonus on their disc. I have no idea what the hell Liszt was thinking! He was either pissed or bored of composing and just couldn’t be arsed.
It’s so horrible I’d recommend not listening to it! So out of character of what has proceeded it…
Thanks for posting the Liszt sonata vid, I’m watching it now!
btw, I’m curious what you as a Pom (no hate) make of his accent.
Does it sound Australian to you?
Because for me, it sounds incredibly toffy.
Haha, not much of an Australian accent no. He does sound like a toff, but there is the odd twinge of Oz very occasionally.
Haha the original pimp son ending!
Tru, pretty legendary ![]()
Man, it sounds like a piss-take.
Haha I happened to enjoy it.
Da Pimp 2nd Ballah also has a SDC alternate ending
Da pimpson alternate ending GENSUI- you hit both sets of octaves and most of the jury doses off in between, den sum of da mofos are already writing yo score down and den…
U UNLEASH DIS LEGENDARY ending.
Tru, you can hear da jury fuckaz whisparing and turning da pages back and forth and furiously changing out you score to a “no pazz”
Haha, that would actually be hilarious in a competition
WOW. you’re right – thats terrible!!!.
thanks for sharing.
Apparently that was recorded on Liszt’s own piano.
Presumably Liszt used some cheap Chinese piano sheeyat rather than a Pleyel or Erard
The playing is pretty sheeyat too.
I vaguely remember a story about the Countess chick he was banging wanting a ‘loud’ ending or something along those lines.
Lang Lang
Ashkenazy
Brendel
Schiff
Libetta
Also feel free to crucify me, but I prefer Gilels over Richter in 90% of the pieces I’ve heard them both play
