Dear Friends
One of my very favorite works is Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde. I took a class a while ago with one of the leading Mahler scholars of today, Stephen Hefling, and this was his favorite work. We traded many recordings, including this one by Carlos Kleiber, and several by Bruno Walter, one of which I shall post soon.
Carlos Kleiber’s reading is one of the most trenchant out there, and this was for a long time hard to find. I hope you enjoy this work of a great conductor and a wonderful composer.
Performers: Christa Ludwig (Mezzo Soprano). Waldemar Kmentt (Tenor). Conductor: Carlos Kleiber. Orchestra/Ensemble: Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Date of Recording: 6/7/1967. Venue: Live Stuttgart, West Germany. This selection is a monaural recording.
