Pick Ten Liszt recordings to take on a long trip

Hofmann – Erlkonig, Tarantella, Campanella
Fiorentino – Vision
Richter – Wilde Jagd, Liszt piano concerti (studio)
Horowitz – Liebesbotschaft, Paganini etudes 2 and 5, B minor sonata 1932
Ginzburg – Das Wandern, Wohin, Années Bk 1
Cziffra – Les Jeux d’eaux à la villa d’Este (studio)
Lipatti – Sonetto del Petrarca 104
Rachmaninoff – Das Wandern, Standchen

I don’t think I quite got to 20 but I think it might get a bit hazy after this.
It’s very hard for me not to include at least something from Arrau but I can’t think of any particular recording which stands out above the rest.
Overall, I love his Liszt.

There’s also Liszt that I love enough to include on a desert island without having an entirely satisfactory version of (except that which I hear in my mind) such as FF and the Via Crucis.

YES! One of the smoothest recs of all time

The young Horowitz was basically the perfect pianist imo.
Imagine if he were as well documented at that stage of his career as pianists like YW are today.

Agreed. His tone in those early recs is so smooth and silky. Perfect pedaling, so many amazing effects and all natural.

Friedman is still my no 1 for Chopin. But yeah…

Da HO zon from '32…fuuuckkkk :ho: :ho: :ho:

Da DOC tarantella encore from tha all hi pimp recital at Merkin (doubl Tru)

:rectum: mephisto 2 :pimp:

Tru I really enjoyed da Etudez’ erotica and LAPD

Tru! Da rectum played a wikid MEPH 2. Such an underrated piece!

Some great Liszt selections here.

I think I once downloaded quite a few of his recordings from this blog:
nealshistorical.wordpress.com/2 … -complete/
Doesn’t look as if they’re still available over there. Let me know if any of you is interested, I could try to dig them up.

I can’t believe I forgot Horowitz’s Valse Oubliée (from his first recordings).
That is actually probably my favourite of his early recordings, along with 10/8.

Benzi/Ziff Totentanz
Gavazzeni/ABM Totentanz
Richter Pensee des mortes
Barere Sonata
Ziff Gounod-Faust waltz

Need a recording of the Norma Fantasy; maybe Lewenthal, Bolet is too slow and increasingly splashy.
Likewise I couldn’t be without a Liebestod, but I’ve spent so much time on it that I dislike 90% of recordings.

Maybe Berman Vallee d’Obermann.
Can’t make up my mind re Dante.

Wild’s Robert le Diable is a must.
