I get the funérailles/heroic connection, but randomly I like the Liszt way more than the Chopin. It’s so dark and brooding. Great music. Although, the Chopin is the piece that made me fall in love with classical music and the piano.
And Funerailles imo contains just about the best melody Liszt ever wrote. I feel a lot of his melodies are constructed from the starting point of the harmonic progression (eg lezbo dream 3). Not here.

Schumann romance op 28 no 2 and Schubert impromptu in G -flat, and not just because they’re in the same (enharmonic) key. I made the mistake of programming these together once. It sounded like one 10 minute sheeyat raher than two short sheeyats.

In more general terms Kalkbrenner is fun. Early works are fake Chopin (though in all fairness Kalkbrenner was first), late works are fake Liszt.
Similarly early Scriabin, Bortkiewicz etc of course but I can’t think of any more specific examples. Jeux d’eau ~ Villa d’Este perhaps? Lugubre gondola I ~ Lugubre gondola II
