Gosh, it would be fun to read the 1963 original. I have the 1987 revision. I don’t remember what he said about SR/EG/VA actually (Liszt is just emerging where I am in the book now), but the misses I recall is that he dismissed some of the most important pianists of the young generation at the time by “Pletnev, Sokolov and [bunch of random mofos] have all come and gone without making any particular impression”, or words to that effect. And he was too harsh on Pachmann of course, IMO anyway. Surprisingly however I remember he liked Pogo, although I also know he recorded his Carnegie recitals at the time which were outstanding so he caught him in good light.

The most annoying thing about the book for me otherwise is that he doesn’t list any sources, though he sometimes mentions them during the narrative. Spohr’s memoirs would probably make a pretty interesting read.

I think in the old edition he wrote something like Richter’s playing is very introverted, Gilels is extroverted, and Ashkenazy’s is the ideal blend of the two. His take in the last edition on the young mofos of the time was more miss than hit.

Well to his defense regarding the young mofos it’s nothing unusual. There are people who remain open and plastic throughout their days, but the general pattern is that people become more stiff and set in their ways as they get older and have a harder time keeping up with new winds emerging, or to understand and recognize what younger generations are doing since they haven’t spun in sync with the world for a while. It’s a little bit about exposure too - Pletnev had done some remarkable things by 1987 already, but only just, and I’m not sure Schonberg had heard them. Sokolov largely still had the future ahead of him by then, although to still not be able to identify two of the most important pianists of their generation - who were already in their 30s, it’s not like Schonberg heard them when they were 16 - feels like a pretty remarkable blunder for the kind of expert HCS after all was.
