Rachmaninov Liturgy of St. John-Great Rec

Dear Friends,

Have you heard this beautiful work of Rachmaninov? It is every bit as haunting as his Vespers, and this recording is superb. The following information was found online about this recording:

Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, for chorus, Op. 31
Composed by Sergey Rachmaninov
with Sergei Baikov, A. Karakuts, N. Gerasimova
Conducted by Vladimir Minin

Rec. 1990?

The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is a standard Russian Orthodox liturgical text; Rachmaninov used it for the earlier of his two great sacred choral works (the other is the Vespers, or “All-Night Vigil”). This work of symphonic proportions was composed in less than three weeks. After it was completed, Rachmaninov wrote to a friend that he had been carried away by the project and that it had been a long time since he had written music with such pleasure.

The intense beauty of this recording is up there with the recording of Vespers with Polyanski.

I hope you enjoy it!

thank you Zsolt! I love very much Rach’s vocal music and I particularly enjoy in his Vesperes. I’ll download it now! Ps. You know maybe the name of the choir?
