How does this piece compare in difficulty to Ravel’s other major works, mainly Gaspard and Tombeau, and how it would compare to Petrouchka or the Bartok Sonate? If there are different transcriptions, which I think there are, I’m wondering about the one Chu-Fang Huang played in the
cliburn last year.
easier than gaspard, harder than tombeau
Ravel La Valse and Sonatina are pretty much the same level.
a bit WTF? zeriouzly?
I think da MINIZON iz much eaziah dan da VALZE
Sorry kritty, but they are in different leagues.
3rd mov of Sonatine < La Valse
Ondine < La valse
La valse < Scarbo
1st and 2nd mov of Sonatine are mucher easier than the 3rd.
…Considering difficulty in it’s broad sense.
Harder than Toccata? I would think dat ranks alongside da gaspard.
But den dat just shows how pointless dese comparisons are unless you’re comparing petrouschka with ‘fingal’s cave’.
I played Tombeau last year. Everything was pretty good but the toccata is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever played. I’m liking working on petrouchka more, probably because it’s neo-classical and I’m not too experienced with impressionism. I might give up in the next couple weeks, but we’ll see.
The Ravel Toccata is juz insane.
Saw it live . Other than Gaspard de la Nuit and some other parts of Tombeau, 'tiz my fav. Ravel.
It’s awesome but it was impossible for me at the time.
MATT DAMON
i’ve seen a pianist with not so good tech play the tocatta…
it really is a lot easier than Scarbo,
however… i should just say it’s less hard… they are both beasts, but Scarbo is a crazy fuckwad.
btw, Kritty I hope you were joking
