I think this is an incredible testament to his confidence and quick thinking. He spends a few seconds trying to get back on track, realizes it’s a lost cause and immediately goes back to a place where he’s comfortable.
If you don’t know the piece, you probably won’t even notice it.

my favorite is his live rach b-flat prelude where the chords get totally wtf at the end but he never lets the fury subside, elusive as the right notes become.
pozz among the best cg recordings (behind, the plante op. 10 no. 7, of course)
maybe canadian will post it sometime?
It doesn’t sound familiar. Do you know the date/venue?
I have like 14 recs of him playing the 23/2 so it could take a while to figure it out by listening to them all.
i believe it was live from carnegie hall, and it was on a cbs lp. but this is just my memory… i’ll check on it.
Tru, not really a memory slip, but definitely a screw-up.

I love this interpretation. Such imperial and majestic playing. This is truly regal musicianship. Thank you for posting it.

My guess is around 59 seconds, I don’t know the piece either.
This is a Shostakovich Fugue for anyone who doesn’t know (cannot remember wich).
I probably wouldn’t have noticed and I agree that Richter recovered superbly.

Dos vidanya, muthafuckers…
(I always wanted to say something as Shostakovich )
i always knew that your avatar was shostakovich, by virtue of this being a m*sic forum.
but he could really pass for rumsfeld in that pic.
The composer’s own recording of that piece is phenomenal.

Rumsfeld?! WTF?!?!!
I love this picture of Shostakovich because he’s so intently thinking/listening. As an intensely private/introverted man, this captures so much of the “gears” going on in his head.
